How to plait your horse's mane | Your Horse

Published on 15 Dec 2018 / In How-to & Style

A plaited mane can be just the ticket to getting your horse looking super-smart when you go out competing.

We've spoken to expert groom Jenny Ellis for her advice on getting you plaiting in style, but before you start there are a few things to bear in mind that will help you and your horse – first, remember a freshly washed mane can be trickier to plait, so if your horse needs a hair wash consider doing this a couple of days before your show to allow the natural greases to help your plaits stay neat.

The second thing is the timing of your plaiting – although it saves you time to plait the night before, this can make your horse uncomfortable, so whenever possible plait on the day, and always take plaits out as soon as you can.
